By the time you download this list, it's probably outdated -- at least
three or four Route 66-related books are being published each year.
I've included all the small-press and self-published books that I've
been able to find, along with price and ordering information as known.
Enjoy!
ROUTE 66 BOOKS
Spencer Crump, ROUTE 66, AMERICA'S FIRST MAIN STREET (1994): More a
discussion of everyday life in the Twenties and Thirties than a
guidebook or Route 66 history; some nice postcards, though. (144 pp.;
$6.95 from Zeta Publishers Co., P.O. Box 38, Corona Del Mar, CA
92625, ISBN 0-918376-00-8.)
C.H. ("Skip") Curtis, THE MISSOURI US 66 TOURBOOK (1994): Everything
ANYONE could want to know about Missouri's stretch of the Mother Road,
including driving directions and over 350 photos. (262 pp; $19.95 + $2
s/h from Curtis Enterprises, 2302 Gascony Drive, Lake St. Louis, MO
63367, 314-835-8267, ISBN 0-9633863-4-4.)
Bob Moore and Patrick Grauwels, ROUTE 66: A GUIDEBOOK TO THE MOTHER
ROAD (1994): From the editor of the late, lamented MOTHER ROAD
JOURNAL, the most complete mile-by-mile guide to Route 66 has fine
color photos but is marred by confusing layout. (102 pp.; $17.95; in
bookstores. Published by USDC, Inc., 13994 Boquita Drive, Corona Del
Mar, CA 92014, ISBN 0-9641457-0-7.)
Jack D. Rittenhouse, A GUIDE BOOK TO HIGHWAY 66 (1946, reprinted
1989): Facsimile of the original postwar guidebook, now mostly of
historical interest. (128 pp.; $6.50; in bookstores. Published by
the University of New Mexico Press; ISBN 0-8263-1148-2.)
Jill Schneider, ROUTE 66 ACROSS NEW MEXICO: A WANDERER'S GUIDE (1991):
Chatty, impressionistic travelogue-with-reminiscences. (212 pp.;
University of New Mexico Press; ISBN 0-8263-1280-2.)
Quinta Scott and Susan Croce Kelly, ROUTE 66: THE HIGHWAY AND ITS
PEOPLE (1988): The most "academic" history of Route 66, with
numerous black and white photos. (210 pp.; $17.95; in some
bookstores. Published by the Univ. of Oklahoma Press; ISBN
0-8061-2133-5 [hardcover ed.].)
Tom Snyder, THE ROUTE 66 TRAVELER'S GUIDE AND ROADSIDE COMPANION
(1990): Conveniently sized for those who actually drive the route,
but the driving directions are less useful than in other books.
Don't try to follow them while driving. (136 pp.; $8.95; in
bookstores from St. Martin's Press. ISBN 0-312-04587-5. A second
edition was just published -- $10.95, ISBN 0-312-131623 -- if you
have the first, don't bother with the second.)
Tom Teague, SEARCHING FOR 66 (1991): Memories of the old road from
those who did, and do, live along its route. (246 pp.; $10.00 from
Samizdat House, 1208 W. Edwards, Springfield, IL 62704, ISBN
0-940859-09-2.)
Michael Wallis, ROUTE 66: THE MOTHER ROAD (1990): History and
culture of Route 66, with photos, reminiscences and more -- if you're
wondering why Route 66 refuses to die, read this book and find out.
(240 pp.; $18.95 paperback and $29.95 hardcover; in bookstores from
St. Martin's Press. ISBN 0-312-04049-0 [hardcover].)
Michael Wallis and Suzanne Fitzgerald Wallis, ROUTE 66 POSTCARDS
(1993): Postcard-sized collection of cards from classic Mother Road
attractions. (30 cards; $8.95; in bookstores from St. Martin's
Press. ISBN 0-313-09904-5.)
Also ROUTE 66 MAGAZINE, P.O. Box 66, Laughlin, NV 89028-0066, $12.00
per year: Four-color glossy quarterly, covering Route 66 and nearby
Western destinations.

SOCIETY FOR COMMERCIAL ARCHEOLOGY, Room 5010, National
Museum of American History, Washington, DC 20560: The
only preservation group dedicated to roadside icons and
Americana -- highways, gas stations, neon signs, tourist
cabins, diners, gas stations, drive-ins and the like.

with a more scholarly focus, and invitations to SCA
conferences and tours.
